Why RGB survives the handoff to ink
RGB is the language of displays. CMYK is the language of inks. Historically that meant you converted early because CMYK was the only way to control separations and ink limits. Two things shifted. First, digital presses widened their native gamut with better pigments and extra channels like orange, green, and violet. Second, rips got smarter. They now do high quality color management on the fly and can map RGB into the device’s full range without you clipping it first.
That does not mean CMYK is dead. It means you should ask where the conversion should happen. If your printer runs an extended-gamut device, an RGB source lets their rip decide the best mapping. If they run a strict CMYK workflow or offset with a defined standard, you convert at the end to their profile and check the result.
The three things that always change on press

Gamut
A monitor can show electric turquoise and laser orange. Most CMYK builds on real paper cannot. Out-of-gamut colors will be clipped or compressed. You soft-proof to see that loss and decide if you want to tame saturation in the source or let the rendering intent handle it.
Tone
Dots grow on paper. The midtones print darker than they look on your screen. This is tone value increase. If your soft-proof gets heavy in the 30 to 70 percent zone, lighten the curve a touch and recheck edges so you do not wash out detail.
White and black points
Paper white is not display white. Ink black is not OLED black. When you simulate paper and black, your preview flattens a bit. That is good. It brings your expectations into the same contrast range you will get on a real sheet.
Soft-proofing that respects reality
There are many apps. The basics are the same.
- Keep your master in RGB.
- Load the right ICC profile for the press or standard. For coated work in North America, GRACoL CRPC profiles are common. In Europe, look for Fogra references.
- Start with Relative Colorimetric and Black Point Compensation. If you see harsh clipping in saturated areas, compare Perceptual.
- Toggle paper simulation when you are on matte or warm stocks.
- Make non-destructive fixes in RGB. If a CMYK delivery is required, convert at the end and compare again.
You are not chasing a perfect match on screen. You are deciding which compromises you prefer before a single sheet moves.
When to keep it RGB and when to convert
Keep it RGB when your vendor says their rip prefers RGB or when they run extended-gamut digital presses. You preserve the most color and let the device do the smartest separation at print time.
Convert to CMYK when the shop requires press-ready CMYK or when you must meet a defined print condition. Use their profile. Do the conversion once. Do not ping-pong back and forth. That only adds rounding errors and banding.
Create separate outputs when the same art will hit very different conditions. A glossy vinyl sticker and a newsprint insert do not want the same file.

Rendering intents in plain English
Relative Colorimetric tries to keep every in-gamut color exact and snaps the rest to the closest printable value. That is why neutrals stay stable. It is the default for many print workflows.
Perceptual remaps more colors to keep relationships looking natural. If you have big fields of saturated color that look choppy or dead in Relative, Perceptual can smooth them.
Black Point Compensation is a helper that rescales shadows so you do not lose detail when the press cannot hit the display’s deep black. Leave it on unless a vendor tells you not to.
Rich black without regret
Small black text should be 100 K only. Registration is cleaner and edges stay sharp. Big black fills look better as a rich black build. The recipe depends on the press and total ink limit. If a shop follows a GRACoL coated profile with a 320 percent TAC, a common build is 60 C, 40 M, 40 Y, 100 K. Use your vendor’s spec, then confirm coverage in Acrobat’s Output Preview so you do not run into drying or setoff issues.
Also check overprint. Black vector text usually overprints by default, which prevents white halos if registration drifts a hair. Large objects should not overprint unless you mean it.
Extended-gamut devices change the math
A lot of digital sticker work now runs on machines that add channels like OGV or custom fluorescent sets. These devices can hit colors that standard CMYK cannot. They also have different sweet spots. Feeding them an RGB file retains more information about the intended color. The rip can then leverage the extra inks to get closer. Converting early to a narrow CMYK profile throws that information away.
You still need discipline. Soft-proof to the device profile if you have it. Keep an eye on total ink. Watch gradients. But the old rule that “CMYK is always safer” is no longer a rule. It is a question of where the color conversion is best handled.
Brand colors, spot inks, and reality checks
If the brand color is a deal breaker, decide if you need a spot. A Pantone spot on offset is still the gold standard for a very specific hue within that system. On digital, you often simulate the spot with process inks. That simulation can be very close on certain devices and stocks, but not perfect on every one. Soft-proof, run a press proof if possible, and keep a signed sample as a control for future reruns.
When you cannot own a number, own a method. Define the profile, the stock, the intent, and a proofing routine. That repeatability is what protects your brand over time.

Sometimes, yes. Sometimes Relative looks cleaner, especially for product shots where neutrals matter. Compare and choose, not by dogma.
“Paper simulation is optional.”
If you care about contrast and subtle color shifts, simulate the paper. It is not pretty on screen. It is accurate.
One real example
A brand built a bright teal for social that landed outside standard CMYK on coated stock. On press-ready CMYK proofs, the teal slumped toward green. On an extended-gamut digital device, keeping the source in RGB and letting the rip separate it preserved more of the blue.
